Regulation (EU) 2019/1781 on ecodesign requirements for electric motors

Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1781 of 1 October 2019 laying down ecodesign requirements for electric motors and variable speed drives pursuant to Directive 2009/125/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, sets out ecodesign requirements for the placing on the market or putting into service of electric motors and variable speed drives, including those integrated into other products.
The regulation applies to induction motors without carbon brushes, commutators, slip rings or electrical rotor connections, designed to operate at a sinusoidal voltage with a frequency of 50 Hz, 60 Hz or 50/60 Hz and having a rated output power of 0.12 kW up to and including 1000 kW, among other provisions.
It further applies to speed controllers with a three-phase input for the motors regulated by the regulation, considering other provisions.
The Ecodesign Regulation includes, on the one hand requirements for energy efficiency and on the other hand, requirements for product information of products in which the respective motors or frequency converters are installed.

Flanged motors

Single-phase asynchronous motors are used in the rotary vane pump product family. These fall within the scope of the ecodesign Regulation and must meet the energy efficiency requirements from 01.07.2023.

More detailed product information on energy efficiency can be found in the following documents.

Elnor Energy Efficiency Data Sheet

Speed controls or frequency converters

According to Article 2, Section (1) b), the regulation only applies to speed controls (frequency converters) with a three-phase input. Frequency converters used by VACUUBRAND are operated exclusively with a single-phase voltage. Thus, all frequency converters used by VACUUBRAND do NOT fall within the scope of this regulation.

Motors with 24 V supply

The scope of the regulation only includes induction motors. DC motors are not affected.
In its VARIO-SP pump series, VACUUBRAND uses motors that operate with 24 V DC. Therefore they do NOT fall within the scope of the ecodesign regulation.

Motors of lower power

Regulation 2019/1781 applies to motors with a rated output power of more than 120 W.
VACUUBRAND uses motors with the following output powers, among others:

• 40 W (e.g. ME 1, ME 1C, BVC product family).
• 60 W (MZ 1C)
• 80 W (MD 1, MD 1C)
• or 100W (RE 2.5 / RZ 2.5)

These motors do NOT fall within the scope of the regulation.

Synchronous motors

The regulation contains ecodesign requirements for the placing on the market or commissioning of induction motors intended for direct operation on the public power grid.
VACUUBRAND uses synchronous motors in some variants of the product families of ME 16 XX, MD 12 XX, MV 10 XX as well as the pumping units PC 3016 XX, PC 3012 XX, PC 3010 XX, VAC 24seven and the VACUU-PURE® series. These motors are not intended for direct operation on the public power supply and therefore are NOT covered by this regulation.

Motors for operation in explosive environments

VACUUBRAND uses TENV motors intended for operation in explosive atmospheres. According to article 2 section (2) l), TENV motors are considered an exception to the regulation, so they are excluded from the energy efficiency or product information requirements.
(TENV = totally enclosed non-ventilated).

Motor kits

VACUUBRAND uses several motor kits, consisting of a rotor and a stator, in different dimensions and power ratings. In the course of an assembly process, these individual parts are put together to form a vacuum pump with an integrated motor.
According to Article 2 Section 2) a), motors fully integrated into a product are to be considered as an exception to the regulation.
